Natural and Healthy Ways to Wake Up in the Morning

Maybe you're a morning person – one of those rare beings who wakes up chipper and full of productivity. Or maybe you're more of a morning hater, and would rather sleep the day away than hop out of bed excitedly. Or you might be somewhere in-between. As a race, we tend to fluctuate as to how much or how little we enjoy early days. But there's good news – for everyone: there are plenty of easy and healthy ways you can wake up each day. Even when it's early, and even when you'd rather be cozy in bed. Some days, even the biggest morning people around can host a groggy experience, but by following these easy steps you can work to eliminate those instances as often as they take place.
Start by setting a routine. Yes, we're always talking about these things – how going to bed at the same time and then waking up at a similar time is helpful, but it's also true. The more regulated you can keep your sleep patterns, the better your body will self-adjust. You won't be longing for late morning sleep if you don't normally get it. Instead you'll be alert and ready for the day.
Next, take steps to prove to yourself that the day is starting. Make the bed, open the blinds, start a pot of coffee or prep breakfast. These actions are very simple, but remind you that it is morning and time to get up. Even when in the back of the mind, each instance can help subconsciously keep you awake. Natural sunlight also provides a (safe) chemical reaction in the brain to help you get up. Think about how much easier it is to wake in the summer vs. winter; something about natural light helps eliminate that can't-wake feeling, even when running on less sleep than normal.
Coffee, tea, or a healthy breakfast can also help. However, it's not a good idea to rely on caffeine every day. If you're dependent on your morning beverage, consider pushing it back an hour or two into the day to let the body wake on its own.
You can also drink a glass of water – which is a great morning move already, waking the digestive system and starting it off with serious hydration. Then, choose your breakfast based on how sleepy you're feeling that day. Crunchy fruits, like apples, are proven to offer serious alerting power, while sugars or carb-heavy breakfasts are more likely to send you back to bed.
Now it's time to start the day will full force. Turn on music, take a shower, or stretch the muscles for optimum waking power. That doesn't mean you have to distract yourself or take on too much at once – after all it's not about covering up your morning responsibilities, but rather it's taking your day head-on. By jumping right on into it all can ensure you won't dawdle or use procrastination as an excuse. Morning or not, it's time to get rolling, and utilizing your normal habits will help make this clear to the resting brain.
Finally, think positively. We have more control over our own mood than we realize. Learning to wake up happy will help you actually become happy in life. Choose a playlist that will pump up your thoughts, grab a pair of slippers you'll be excited to put on while getting ready, or simply look forward to something new each day. Combined, you can create a seriously upbeat outlook, and one that will only repeat itself from then on out.
