How to Make Your Lawn Chairs Health-Friendly

Bethaney Wallace on 21st Apr 2015

It’s summer (or close to it), which means most of us will be spending time in a lawn chair. A plastic or fabric version that’s acceptable to use outdoors. And can withstand the elements, while still folding or collapsing as needed. Combining all of those factors, however, doesn’t always call for the best back health. Or rear support, comfort levels, or anything else you’re looking for in a long-term sitting arrangement.

But who says we can’t have the best of both worlds? Why not combine factors that are associated with portable lawn seating, and mesh them together with health-friendly antics? While plenty of brands have attempted to offer these products for us – some with better levels of success than others – creating our own versions can offer up even better results.

Necessary Accessories for Outdoor Back Health

First, start with a lawn chair (or two). Gather up whatever model you enjoy best, and look to its many features that might affect back support and/or pain. Consider folding models, “bag” chairs, benches, and more and how each of them moves weight throughout the sitting position.

Next, stock up on your favorite support products. There are cushions for sitting, wedges that prop behind the back, and all types of versions of the above. You can also look into feet supports, such as a stool to keep the spine better adjusted.

Now it’s time to combine the two. Place your comfort products on your chair(s) and test out how they feel. Depending on chair style, you might not be able to use both at the same time, which means it’s time to upgrade or switch up your formula. By picking out universal support add-ons, however, you can eliminate this problem.

Using Available Resources

If you don’t feel comfortable creating your own back-friendly lawn chair, opt for versions that are pre-designed for alignment. These won’t offer 100% spinal health, but will be a strict improvement from basic seating options. Talk to a salesperson at your nearby sporting goods store, or perform online research to find out what others have had to say about their own experiences.

You can also talk to your doctor, or another health care professional, about what they recommend. This will allow the most personalized chair review, as they’re able to point out different characteristics based on your own pains or recurring back or seat-related issues. The same can be done with rocking chairs, stadium seating, and outdoor benches.

What if it Doesn’t Work?

After all your hard work and effort, what if you still have ongoing back pain from sitting? One fix is to try a different type of chair. Maybe one you haven’t tested before, or with a varied type of support feature. Or, consult (again) with your medical professional about what might be causing your pain. Whether it’s chair related, or from another factor throughout your day that’s flared by how you sit.

Finally, another fix altogether is to stand. Seriously! It might not be enjoyable for hours on end, but when attending a barbeque or just enjoying the back yard, stand for a bit. This gives the weight a better chance to disperse, and your legs to absorb how your body sits, not your rear. Standing can be better for socialization, while providing a better view of the outdoors. Especially when grilling or prepping a meal.

When it comes to outdoor chairs, there are hundreds of options for seating and obtaining better back health. Explore your options and perform a small bit of research to find out what changes will best reduce your pain and allow a healthier back support routine.
